Patitia Verona Grant nee Palmer was born in Hope Bay Portland, Jamaica. Affectionately known as ‘Little’, Patitia joined Edna one of her older sisters when she immigrated to England in November 1960. Her passport listed her occupation, as ‘Dressmaker’ but Pat never sewed a buttonhole in her life. Her first job in the UK was in the engineering field when she became a machine operator at Frances in Blackheath. This she did for a while before joining the staff of Greenwich District Hospital where she worked until her retirement. But whilst Little worked at Greenwich Hospital for over 20 years she was better known for her ability to turn butter, flour and sugar into mouth-watering Wedding, Birthday, and Christmas cakes which have been described as the ‘the best cakes ever’ which I am sure many of you who have had the pleasure of tasting can testify to. Little developed this baking expertise from Mrs Miller her Godmother whilst staying with her in Kingston Jamaica. As the story goes Mrs Miller used to bake cakes and one day she was unwell and unable to bake so she told Little what to do and the rest as they say is history. At her home in 30 Rolt Street Deptford, Little could be found sitting in her chair in the dining room often nodding off with the TV in the background, but anyone who thought she was unaware of what was happening in the world outside Rolt Street were sadly mistaken. From that seat in the dining room Little knew all the good news and the drama in the lives of her family and her friends but she never betrayed a confidence. Little had a big heart and possessed an amazing ability to make everyone she came into contact with feel special and at ease. She would happily give of herself and always be willing to lend a listening ear to those who needed it. Little became the person you could turn to in a crisis, someone to go to for sound advice, someone who would tell you when you were doing wrong, a shoulder to lean and to cry on and someone to give you a hug when needed. Little will be missed by many. She is survived by her husband, her four children, grand children, numerous friends and all the other children that she adopted during her lifetime and welcomed into her home and her heart.
